What Base64 is for
Base64 turns arbitrary bytes into plain ASCII text, so binary data can travel through systems built for text: email, JSON fields, data URIs and HTTP headers. It is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it.
Standard and URL-safe
The standard alphabet uses + and / and pads with =. The URL-safe variant swaps them for - and _ and drops the padding, so the result can sit in a URL or a JWT without escaping.
Unicode
Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, so emoji and non-English characters round-trip correctly. A plain btoa() call fails on those.
